UPDATED: Summer Events Letter 2017

Dear Parent/Carer

I am writing to inform you of some of the arrangements for key dates leading up to the end of term.

Sports Day: Tuesday 11th July

Staff and students are looking forward to the John Roan Sports Day 2017. This will be held at The John Roan Playing Fields, in Kidbrooke Park Road, SE3 9NF.

Students should arrive at the playing fields no later than 8:30am for registration and must be wearing their full PE kit. Students that are not wearing the correct kit will not be permitted to participate in the day. The schools kit includes the green PE t-shirt, black shorts or legging and appropriate sporting footwear. Please make sure students have plenty of water/fluids to drink particularly if weather is forecast to be hot. It may also be necessary to pack either waterproofs or sun cream and a sun hat depending on forecasts.

The following buses stop directly next to the playing fields: the 178 from Woolwich/Lewisham, 321 from Lewisham/Sidcup, B16 from Bexleyheath or 122 from Woolwich/Lewisham. If your child is unable to make their own way to the playing fields a mini bus service is available from the Westcombe Park site. If your child requires this service they must give their name to their Head of Year before the day. The mini buses will leave the Westcombe Park Car Park promptly at 7:45am. Please note there are only limited spaces available.

We recommend that students do not bring their mobile phones or any valuable items to sports day. However, a provision will be made available for students to hand phones in securely. If valuable items are not handed in we will not take responsibility for any lost items.

Students will be able to purchase food and drink from the tuck shop and at the BBQ throughout the day via parentpay. It is important to recognise that we will not be accepting cash. Students that wish to purchase products from the BBQ and tuck shop will need credit added to their parentpay account in advance. Students entitled to free school meals will benefit from the BBQ lunch and there will be options for those that do not eat meat. Energy drinks are not permitted.

Students will be dismissed before 2.00 pm from the playing fields and will be expected to make their own way home. If you have made arrangements for your child to be picked up from the playing fields we are happy to supervise them until you arrive.

We aim to celebrate the achievements of our students on what we hope will be a thoroughly enjoyable sports day.

Founder’s Day: Friday 14 July

Every year the school celebrates Founder’s Day with a short service at St Alfege’s Church in Greenwich.  The school day will be as usual in the morning and therefore students should arrive at 8.30 am.  They will then attend periods 1 and 2 and break as normal.  After break they will be asked to line up in their tutor groups in the playground and will be escorted to the church.  Any student who is unable to attend the church service for religious reasons must have a clear, written and signed note from a parent/carer in their planner, which they must show to their tutor before Friday 7 July.  These students will be supervised on site until 12.45 pm when they will be dismissed from the school grounds. All other students will be dismissed by their tutors after the church service at the bottom of Greenwich Park at approx 12.45 pm.

Students who are entitled to a free school meal will be able to collect their lunch at the Westcombe Park site.  However, they must inform their tutor if they require lunch by Wednesday 12 July at the very latest.

It is extremely important that all students come to school dressed in correct uniform.  Strict rules will apply, as normal, if uniform is not satisfactory.

Last Day of Term: Friday 21 July

The last day of term will be a non-uniform day to support the Don McMath Foundation in the Gambia https://www.donmcmath.org/. Further details of this charity will be shared with students in the coming weeks.  The first two lessons of the day will be normal lessons and then students will be in tutor groups and end of year assemblies.  They will be dismissed from midday.

If you have any further questions regarding arrangements for these days, then please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Guidance and Achievement Leaders, or a member of the PE department re Sports Day.

Yours sincerely
Catharine Wensley
