End of Summer Term 2017

Dear Parents/Carers

As I reach the end of my first year at The John Roan, I am proud of the progress and achievements of our students. We have completed our first round of formal exams for all year groups and Headteacher Assemblies are taking place to celebrate achievement, progress and wider contributions to school life. Our students have a wide range of talents which have been demonstrated recently on work experience, in maths competitions, during the performances of ‘The School of Rock’ and on sports day. This has been a busy and very rewarding year.
As we look ahead to September, I would like to share with you the school pledge and the school code of conduct which we will be adopting from the start of term (enclosed). With a clear set of expectations which are shared by the whole school community, I am confident that we will continue to make rapid progress towards being a great school where everyone is focussed on learning. We will be working with the students to further develop their learning behaviours and ensure that they become resilient and independent learners.

We are pleased to announce our link with Greenwich Titans, setting up the John Roan Basketball Academy in our 6th form, which will enable talented basketball students to develop in sport whilst also studying. This will also provide opportunities for our younger students.

There are changes to the times of the school day which I have shared before. The change does not affect the start and finish times of the day:

Registration & Tutor Time 08.30 – 08.50
Period 1 08.50 – 09.40
Period 2 09.40 – 10.30
Break 10.30 – 10.50
Period 3 10.50 – 11.40
Period 4 11.40 – 12.30
Lunch 12.30 – 13.15
Period 5 13.15 – 14.05
Period 6 14.05 – 14.55

Another change for September is the cost of the main meal deal at lunchtime, which will rise by 20p from £1.80 to £2.00.
We have adapted our uniform so that we now have a school skirt and school trousers with a small crest. There is a letter enclosed which explains this in more detail, including how to access financial support for the purchase of uniform items, if required. We will be providing one skirt or pair of trousers at no cost to you.
It remains true that all students will be expected to be well-prepared for their learning in September in the following ways:

  • Bring the equipment they need to learn (sharp items must be in a pencil case)
  • Show pride in being part of the school community through the way they wear their uniform
  • Behave sensibly in and around the school to maximise time for learning
  • Attend school on time every day
  • Complete homework (which will be set regularly on Show my Homework)
  • Keep all mobile phones and devices off and out of sight throughout the school day, including break and lunchtime.

We are saying goodbye to Deputy Headteacher, Claire Flynn, who has been with the school for 26 years, and Anne Beswick, Assistant Headteacher. I would like to wish both of them a very happy and healthy retirement and to thank them for their total dedication to John Roan and to education in general.
At the beginning of next term you will receive a report summarising your child’s progress over the academic year 2016-17. This will allow you to support your child to set appropriate targets and ensure they make good progress during the next academic year.
You will find enclosed a list of important dates for the Autumn term. Please could you make a special note of which day and time your child returns to school in September as you will see it is a staggered start.
I wish you all a very happy, safe summer.
Yours sincerely
Catharine Wensley
Headteacher
