Headteacher Welcome

Headteacher

Welcome to The John Roan. Founded in 1677, we are one of the oldest state schools in the country, with a rich and distinguished past. Having received funding under the government’s Building

Schools for the Future initiative, we have just opened our doors to one of the UK’s most exciting, innovative, and flexible learning environments. The John Roan has been dedicated to serving the community of Greenwich for more than 335 years. With a brand new, state-of-the-art building at Westcombe Park and a fully redeveloped facility at Maze Hill, we are perfectly placed to deliver the highest standards of education into the 21st century.

We are a ‘good’ 11-18 school (Ofsted 2013) with 1280 students, including a sixth form of around 205.

We believe education should be a positive and transformational experience, regardless of ability or background.

We are fully committed to raising achievement for everyone and have the highest expectations of all our students in every area of school life. We aim to create a ‘love of learning’ and a resilience that is essential for achieving excellence. We work hard to ensure every young person is happy, safe and successful ‘students are polite and respectful’ (Ofsted 2013)

Teaching and Learning is at the heart of everything we do ‘Teaching is at least good, some is outstanding’

(Ofsted 2013). We have strong classroom practice, combined with an appropriate and personalised curriculum, rigorous tracking, monitoring of progress and support from home to ensure the best possible outcomes for all.

We have a warm, friendly and caring atmosphere. The relationships we enjoy with the Greenwich Observatory and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance go from strength to strength. Our location overlooking the Greenwich World Heritage Site continues to inspire pupils, staff, parents and visitors alike.

The John Roan values every student who comes through our doors and welcomes them into our school family.

Our founder, John Roan, bequeathed his estate to educate the town-born children of Greenwich. We expect students to take pride in themselves and our school values are to be proud, respectful, involved, determined and excellent.  We want everyone to be the best they can be.

Do come and visit us. We look forward to welcoming you and your daughter or son at The John Roan next year.
