Ofsted Letter to Parents 4th June 20184th June 2018
I am writing to inform you that The John Roan’s Ofsted report has been released following the inspection that took place on 21 and 22 March; a copy of which is now available to read here. It is with disappointment that I must inform you that the school has been rated ‘Inadequate’, with serious weaknesses. Inspectors acknowledged the prolonged period of upheaval due to significant changes in leadership over recent years but believe that the school must take action to improve.
Since my appointment as Executive Headteacher in February, the Leadership Team and I have introduced a series of progressive and robust policies and procedures. The report praises recent improvements, particularly in terms of behaviour, personal development and teaching and learning, but correctly states more time is required to embed all new initiatives throughout the school.
Rapid improvement is imperative and, following the inspection, we have compiled a comprehensive action plan to enact Ofsted’s recommendations. Evidence of our transformational programme can already be seen in a thorough review of our behaviour policy and its implementation, and training for middle leaders to empower them with the skills to adequately track student progress and plan appropriate tasks.
As the report clearly identifies, we are fortunate that there are examples of excellent practice taking place which we can model across the school. In particular, the inspection team highlighted: students’ pride, our thriving sixth form provision, a broad careers advice service, rewarding partnerships with local employers and strong outcomes in terms of students’ progression into university or employment. I am proud inspectors believe our young adults are well prepared for life in modern Britain.
The John Roan, I firmly believe, provides young people in Greenwich with a unique educational experience. By blending over 335 years of heritage with a dynamic and contemporary approach to learning, we offer every student life changing opportunities to discover the endless possibilities available to them and successfully exceed their potential.
I have been a Headteacher in Inner London for seven years, and a senior school leader for many more, and want to reassure you that I have the necessary experience to oversee the school’s required improvements. The inspectors recognised this and highlighted the clarity that I and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) have regarding what the priority areas are and how to improve them.
Your child(ren)’s future is our top priority and I know the crucial part you will play in working with us to ensure their success. I am committed to ensuring that you are regularly updated about what we are doing to secure excellent outcomes for everyone at The John Roan. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact my PA, Tracey Arnold, at firstname.lastname@example.org who will ensure that I receive your messages.
