Chair of Governors Letter

2nd March 2018

Dear Parent / Carer

I am writing to you with some very good news. The Governing body on Wednesday night appointed Mrs Cath Smith as the Headteacher of The John Roan. The current arrangement of Mrs Smith being at John Roan  four days a week and Dr Richard Marshall acting as Headteacher on the fifth day, will continue until the end of the  summer term, while Mrs Smith fulfils the notice period required by her current school. She will join John Roan fulltime in September. However, with immediate effect, she will no longer be acting in an interim capacity, but will have authority as the substantive Headteacher, with the backing of the Governing body, to move things forward at the school and build on strengths and work on areas that need improvement.

A number of you will have already met Mrs Smith either individually or at school events. She is a very experienced Headteacher, and I know from the feedback I have had both directly and through your parent governors, that she enjoys the confidence of parents and families. She has also, in a short time, established a good relationship with the pupils and staff and commands their respect.

The school has been through turbulent times and has experienced an unacceptably high number of changes of leadership over the last three years.  We are not out of the woods totally because we still face an OFSTED inspection which will be very challenging and we will need to be able to demonstrate and convince about our capacity to bring about improvements, but with Mrs Smith at the helm as Headteacher, I do believe we have the opportunity to do that by demonstrating the strategic and experienced leadership that OFSTED will be looking for.

Thank you for your patience during a difficult time and I am sure you will want to join with me in congratulating Mrs Smith on her appointment as Headteacher and welcome her wholeheartedly to the John Roan community

Yours sincerely,

Christine Whatford
