“When in doubt go to the library”. Hermione Granger
The John Roan School has two well-stocked libraries that cater for all year groups. The libraries stock a wide range of fiction and non-fiction materials giving our students the opportunity to read for pleasure and have the resources needed to complete coursework and homework.
Both libraries run a packed schedule of fun-filled reading based events to inspire our students. In the past academic year the libraries have celebrated National Poetry Day with a craft poems activity and classic novel, the Lord of the Flies with a survival challenge for Years 9, 10 and 11. The libraries have lots of new fun activities planned throughout the year.
Maze Hill Library
The Maze Hill library opens before school, every break and every lunchtime and many of our pupils enjoy the opportunity to relax in pleasant surroundings – the students can use one of the I-pads for homework or revision, play board games, catch up on the news, or borrow books. Maze Hill also offers a host of lunchtime clubs including Lego Club and the JR Journalists. After school there is a daily Homework Club to provide students with additional support.

Westcombe Park Library
The Westcombe Park library opens before school, and at break and lunchtime to allow our KS4 students the opportunity to study for their GCSEs modern surroundings – the students can use one of the networked computers, catch up on the news in the papers or borrow books. There is a wide selection of magazines and study guides for students, as well as the opportunity to do Zen colouring when they need a break from studying. Next year will also see the first Carnegie Shadowing Group start at Westcombe Park.
Library Twitter Feed
The libraries have their own twitter feed (we’re JR Library on twitter) why not follow us and get the latest reading news, and find out about all the latest library events happening in school. We’ll also be tweeting daily inspirational quotes and recommendations reads.
Philip Womack: Our Patron of Reading
A Patron of Reading is a school’s special, designated author with whom the school forms a personal attachment. Throughout 2016 and 2017 we have been very lucky to have Philip Womack as our Patron of Reading. Philip is a fantasy author and has written The Darkening Trilogy and Double Axe. Philip will continue to be our Patron of Reading for the next two years and we have lots planned including twitter chats, competitions and author visits.
